Summary/Profile Page
It should obviously always contain:
- Name (your preferred name)
- Address / Contact details
There are a number of other possibilities, depending on the level or type of position. These include:
- Capability/Competency Statement/Career Profile 1-2 sentences on your background and areas of strength
- Career Summary
- Key Achievements - illustrating success in similar roles
- Qualifications (Tertiary)
Employment/Career History
- Keep this area relevant - usually to the last 10-15 years maximum.
- Company Name, Position Title, Dates - month and year
- Company information (if relevant):
- A brief profile of the company which may include approximate turnover in dollars, number of employees, main focus of business. Remember to keep these very brief, maximum 2-3 lines
Responsibilities
- Provide a list to ensure the reader understands why the role existed. Stick to key areas of responsibilities rather than a list of duties/ tasks
- The dimensions of your position - state-wide/national
- How much accountability and/or responsibility you had eg. budgets/staff
- Who reported to you/who you reported to
- Usually start with a verb and keep in the present tense
Achievements
- How well did you perform in the job
- Successful projects or any initiatives you developed and implemented
- Quantify wherever possible by using numbers or percentages to illustrate your successes
Other/Personal Details
- Languages spoken
- Training courses /Professional Development (internal/external)
- Computer literacy
- Memberships (professional and social)
- Voluntary and community based activities
- Interests/hobbies
- Residency - depending on your background, it may need to be explicitly stated
- Referees - There is no need to include a list of referees in the résumé document. Indicate instead that "Referees Available on Request" and maintain a separate document that you can produce at interview or when asked. This way you control who and when your references are contacted
This should include:
- Names, addresses and current contact numbers
- Indicate previous status/relationship to you
- Inform referees of the position and requirements
- Ask your referees - does my résumé accurately reflect my skills and abilities?
